"You know. In your heart and your soul, you just know. There's no confusion, no question."
"Well, I'm confused and I have a lot of questions. So I guess I don't have to worry about love for a while, especially with McCall. Right now I need to keep him from getting his head blown off." D.J. sat up with a squeak of alarm. She stared at the doorway, her eyes widening in dismay. "McCall! He went outside." She jumped out of bed and got down on her knees, forgetting her nakedness as she searched under the bed for her underwear. "I told the captain I wouldn't let him out of my sight. What's wrong with me?" She located the item and hopped back and forth from foot to foot as she put the briefs on. "I'm supposed to be protecting him, and here I sit yapping with you. Where's my brain? If he gets killed, I'm gonna be out of a job."
"If he gets killed, you'll have a lot more problems than losing your job. Hold on." Josie raised her hand for silence. She tilted her head as though listening to a voice no one else could hear. "Yes, he is having some difficulty. Perhaps you should go out and give him a hand."
Fear thundered through D.J. in tempo with the accelerating beat of her heart. Why had she let him go outside on his own? McCall was her responsibility. What kind of cop was she?
She grabbed the closest items of clothing available, shoved her feet into her tennis shoes without socks, and snatched her service weapon from the dresser, snapping the clip into place as she raced
